Битва у города Геттисберга в штате Пенсильвания 1-4 июля 1863, одно из наиболее значительных сражений Гражданской войны [Civil War]. Армия конфедератов [Confederate Army] (75 тыс. человек) под командованием генерала Р. Ли [Lee, Robert Edward] вторглась в южную Пенсильванию, где натолкнулась на сопротивление Потомакской армии [Army of the Potomac] (90 тыс. человек) под командованием генерала Дж. Мида [Meade, George Gordon]. Битва началась с атаки южан на правый фланг северян, которых им удалось оттеснить к городу. 2 июля генерал Дж. Лонгстрит [Longstreet, James] развил наступление на левом фланге. 3 июля генерал южан Дж. Пикетт [Pickett, George Edward] прорвал оборону в центре, на Семетери-Ридж [Cemetery Ridge], где произошла самая кровавая часть сражения. Из 15 тыс. солдат Пикетта остались в живых лишь 5 тыс. Но ночью 4 июля под натиском северян конфедераты отступили. Геттисберг стал для них военной катастрофой, хотя стороны понесли примерно равные потери. На той же неделе генерал Грант [Grant, Ulysses S.] взял Виксберг [Vicksburg], и южане отступили в Вирджинию. Это было последнее вторжение мятежников в штаты Севера. В войне произошел перелом в пользу Союза [Union]
